Established in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that, at first, was dedicated to the sale of fine Douro wines and liqueurs.

What is now the oldest family wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, started, in the 1930s, with the ban on producing port outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines.

Thus, at the end of the 1950s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region was born, Frei João and, later on, the brand Porta dos Cavaleiros, in the demarcated region of Dão.
